South Dakota is well known for Mount Rushmore, a huge sculpture carved into the Black Hills, honoring presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Bison, or buffalo, used to roam freely in the state but now live in large herds in many state parks for protection from hunting.
Badlands National park is a dry, crumbly terrain where softer sedimentary rocks and soils have been heavily eroded by wind and water, causing interesting rock formations and patterns.
