Arctic regions and North Pole

BARNEO ICE CAMP (RUSSIA)
Camp Barneo is a private Russian temporary ice base, established annually since 2002 on an ice floe relatively close to the North Pole.

FRANZ JOSEPH LAND (RUSSIA)
Franz Josef Land is an archipelago inhabited only by Russian military base staff. It is located in the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea and Kara Sea.

KERGUELEN
The Kerguelen Islands, also known as the Desolation Islands, are a group of islands in the southern Indian Ocean. There are no airports on the islands, so all travel and transport from the outside world is conducted by ship. France maintains a permanent presence of 45 to 100 scientists, engineers and researchers.







ÎLES SAINT-PAUL ET AMSTERDAM
Île Saint-Paul is located about 3,000 km southeast of Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. The island is the top of an active volcano and it is rocky with steep cliffs on the east side. It is an important breeding site for seabirds. A scientific research cabin on the island is used for scientific or ecological short campaigns, but there is no permanent population.



Île Amsterdam lies in the southern Indian Ocean. There is only one settlement on the island and is home to about thirty non-permanent inhabitants involved in biological, meteorological and geomagnetic studies.

CROZET
The Crozet Islands are a sub-antarctic archipelago of small islands in the southern Indian Ocean. The permanent station Alfred Faure is staffed by 18 to 30 people (depending on the season) and does meteorological, biological, and geological research, maintains a seismograph and a geomagnetic observatory.

Antartica

PORT LOCKROY (UK) 
Port Lockroy is a natural harbour on the north-western shore of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago in front of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Port Lockroy base is now a museum and post office operated by the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust.

BIO HESPÉRIDES (SPAIN)
Hespérides Polar Research Ship is used to service the two Spanish stations in Antarctica: Juan Carlos I and Gabriel de Castilla.


GABRIEL DE CASTILLA (SPAIN)
Gabriel de Castilla Base is a Spanish research station located on Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. http://www.ejercito.mde.es/unidades/Antartica/antartica/




JUAN CARLOS I (SPAIN)
Juan Carlos I is a seasonal (November to March) scientific station operated by Spain. It is situated on Livingston island in the South Shetland Islands.



American Samoa (USA)

American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean. American Samoa consists of five main islands and two coral atolls. The largest and most populous island is Tutuila, with the Manuʻa Islands, Rose Atoll, and Swains Island also included in the territory.
